Yes, these stereotypes were one of the primary reasons it took me so long to realize I was Ace. I grappled with identifying with this term for a long time. Only through a lot, (and I mean, a lot) of reading did I come to the conclusion that I can only be and do what I need to be and do. Society is going to vilify me no matter what. I’m Black, so some people automatically regard me as a“Jezebel”. At the same time, I’m fat, so I get the “Mammy” stereotype, too. Sometimes, it really is like navigating a tightrope of expectations.
