Yeah, we got the same messages here in the US. I grew up in the 70s /80s and got the message loud and clear all over movies and television that Black women were not considered beautiful. The only time I ever heard the word beautiful used was in reference to white women, and those were the only bodies we ever got to see in ads and tv shows, along with white men's reactions to those bodies. In hindsight I realize those messages had less to do with me than the white men who ran the entertainment industry prioritizing their interests in white women's bodies.
My mom did make some efforts at countering these messages, by buying me black dolls, talking about her favorite black actresses, watching black centered shows and movies with me, and talking with me about black history.
This is also part of the reason I consider the 90s a kind of black golden age of tv and movies. There was a lot of black is beautiful messaging in entertainment during that time.
