White America has never listened to Black people when we warned them that the stuff that was happening to us would eventually be happening to them. They didn’t listen to us about the AIDS crisis, the predatory lending crisis, the drug crisis, or any of the things that ravaged our neighborhoods first.
Time and time again, in this long (and entirely unnecessary) pattern, you will see us trying to warn white America that whatever they see happening in black neighborhoods will soon be on their doorsteps, to be met with gloating white supremacy, and finger wagging, and then, for them to be wholly unprepared (with no infrastructure or organization in place to handle the problem), prattling on about how shocking it all is.
