When I hear stories ;like this I am always reminded of schoolyard bullies who, once they learn something especially hurtful about their victims, double down on causing that pain over and over again, and I think part of that is what's going on here. People like that are always looking for other ways to express their resentment and will copy the behavior they hear in new stories, or on TV.
There has always been a contingent of white people who are, for lack of a better term, bullies. Hearing stories about it happening elsewhere, and knowing we don't like them doing it, makes them want to express it even more. You really do have to think of them as ten year olds on the playground. Its the same mindset.
