We saw another version of this during the Covid lockdown when people like this demanded that society open up so that they could go to the hardware store, or hair salon. Their lives, and the major activity through which they’ve entirely identified themselves (consumption), have been inconvenienced. After all who are they if they aren’t consuming? How can they know or show their status to others without something to buy?
