W.E.B. Dubois called this awareness of self vs. awareness of what white peoples are thinking “double consciousness”. I’ve been considering this for a while now. Its not really something white people seem to have. Many of them have the luxury of only thinking about how they perceive the world around them, and as a general rule, don’t really walk around thinking about how black people think of them. (I’m willing to believe however, with the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, that that may have changed for some of them.)
