“Ungrateful” is a very popular word with a certain class of white people, who seem to be under the impression that Black people should kowtow to white people’s needs, as a way to show our appreciation for living in America.

I notice this word crops up a lot, whenever Black people speak out about their treatment in this country, and the attitude appears to be “We allowed you to live in this country, and be successful, so you need to show gratitude to us, and stop making us feel uncomfortable about your shoddy treatment here.”

The use of that one word says a lot more about the person using it, than it does about the situation of the one it’s being used against.
