This makes me think about one of the reasons why men don't protect women from other men. There are a lot of reasons, but I can't help but believe that, while they don't condone violence, and would never commit any violence themselves, they are willing to rely on the threat of violence committed by other men, to get women to acquiesce to their demands.

If a woman is afraid that "maybe" the guy she's rejecting will get violent, because she's heard so many horror stories about it happening, she'll coddle some stranger's feelings, in the hope that he won't be one of those.

That is just one way that men who consider themselves good guys benefit from other men's less good behavior, and while it may not be a conscious thought, I think some men do kind of bank on the idea of a woman being extra nice to him, because she thinks there's the possibility of violence.
