This lack of human connection is the primary reason America does not have nice things. In fact, all that politicians need to do is stand at a podium and claim the other "races" of people are benefitting at white people's expense for white people to vote against their own well being.
The book most helpful to me in understanding this complete inability to understand how all our lives are connected is Jonathan Metzel's Dying of Whiteness.
