This is something I always try to keep in mind when any new and disgusting rules and behaviors come from that end of the political spectrum. It’s not always about the actual politician hating a group of people (although that’s what it looks like Ike when you don’t dig deeper).

The politician may not even believe anything in particular, but they are perfectly willing to disregard the safety of groups of people their followers don’t Iike, and say the types of things about them that they know their followers want to hear. (One of the interesting side effects of them doing this is that they can win their primaries by appealing to their local base of followers, but when it comes to a general election, which opens the voting up to more than just their followers, many of them lose those races.)
