This isn’t the same thing. What happened to them was enacted against essentially powerless civilians, and these are elected officials. They abused their power, and they need to be removed from their positions of power, and never be elected to those positions again, unless and until they have proven they understand what they did, and changed their behavior, because, given the opportunity, they will do it again. They’ll support the next wannabe despot, just to further their career.
