They have not lost the ability to read signage (although I would not be at all surprised by that).
These are the kind of people who NEVER read signs. We get these types of people all the time at the library when we sometimes put up customer service signs. The sign will be right in their face, and all they have to do is shift their eyeballs a little bit to read it, but they don't. Instead, they will ask a question that could be answered by a reading of the sign that's sitting directly in front of them, (or sometimes hanging over their heads).
My mother said something to me once, when I couldn't find something she told me to look for: "Had it been a snake it would've bit you."
My retort was: "Had it been a snake I would've seen it!"
These are the kind of people who would be bitten.
