There really isn’t enough of a horror filmography of women directors to be able to really tell, but I am starting to get some ideas based on the few I have seen.
For a good example of the female gaze in horror film look for an anthology film called XX. I watched that and noticed a difference in not just how the camera is used, but the kinds of stories being told, and how the story is told, and in how the emotions are evoked in films made by women.
On my regular blog, I had a list of horror movies made by women (pitifully few, WoC directors are even worse).
I also did a deep dive into a comparison between the old version of Carrie, and the 2011 Kimberly Pierce version, and the strengths and weaknesses of both. That’s available under my bio here on Medium, if you’re curious.
I’m still refining my opinions as we get more female directors of all types of films.
