The reason it isn't obvious to the people engaging in the crazy behavior is that they live in a social media echo chamber where their followers champion and encourage this kind of acting out. They are dong it for clicks and follows from those people, and are unaware that most Americans see them as utter fools.

The vast majority of Americans are not even on Twitter (I'm not even on Twittter) so the only people they are even aware of are the loons who follow them on there.
