The drawback to that is that the flying monkeys have often burned whatever bridges they had to other people. They've isolated themselves even further by pushing away anyone who could or would help them so that makes things extra difficult. If someone can stick around long enough and be dogged enough they might be able to save the person later, but usually any support group simple leaves them alone.
