That's something people of privilege rarely if ever understand, that as much as they want to believe all people are basically good people and mean well, the only reason they can believe that there is not a contingent of Americans who are wholly and willfully malignant. They have never been on the receiving end of someone's constant, often lifelong abuse, for no reason beyond your existence. Since trump, a lot of white people were disabused of the idea that people are basically "good", and very surprised to find out just how deeply mean-spirited and compassion-less a lot of their friends and family were.

No. Some people are basically good and some are very clearly not any good, and it can take a lifetime (if ever) to be able to tell which one you're dealing with. Most white people have never developed the ability to tell, so I do not trust any of them to tell me whether or not someone else is harmful to me. No. They only know that the person is nice to them, and have no idea how they'll treat me, and neither do I, so I hedge my bets.
