That’s because there’s still far too much of our popular media (I think something like 70%) is is still being created by, for, and about, straight white guys. They’re out there telling the stories of people’s lives they don’t know or have ever lived, so these stories are end up being about what they think of the people who are in them, rather than any kind of authentic telling of marginalized lives by marginalized writers, directors, producers, and actors.

The white men in this industry are never going to be able to write about the life of a single black mother, an Asian American lesbian, or a childless Latina in NY. Quite frankly, they probably never eleven meet such women, or think about women over fifty as the audiences for anything. All they can ever write is their interpretation of lives not their own, and this is why representation is so important, not just in front of the camera, but behind it, as well.
