That's because for her it's not the physical book that is the attraction! It's the story in the book! She consumes the contents, and like you said, throws away the shell! This is why I said she will remember the story, the patterns, the feelings, and images, from the books. She got what she wanted out of them and moved on.
When I was her age the physical book was nothing more than the vehicle through which a story was told.
