Thank you for this essay, I feel like it’s an excellent summation of good horror in general. There’s the introduction at the beginning of a movie of stability, order, and goodness, which is then disrupted by chaos or evil. A team of people must then be assembled to restore the status quo and defeat the evil.

You can apply this formula to many different sub-genres of horror and I I also think it’s why some people find horror movies comforting. Whatever you had faith in at the beginning of the film can be restored or re-affirmed at its end. Of course there are three different types of endings which determine what type of horror one is watching.
Either good wins, evil wins, or no one wins and the ending remains uncertain.
