I can't see that date (or even that relationship) ending in any other way but badly, because they already got off on the wrong foot of not speaking candidly with one another about their expectations.

You're right in that mature, non-game-playing adults would have set the parameters of the date before it reached that point. If he said lets meet for drinks, and you order 48 oysters than you have already stepped beyond his understanding of the parameters of "drinks". I'm a rather literal person, so if someone says lets meet for coffee, I will order coffee, not an entire full course lunch.
