Publishing is very probably one of the worse industries when it comes to pandering to a certain type of white, middle-class, cisgender, straight audience by the same types of writers! I can honestly say that in 50 years of reading, I don't believe I have ever been enticed to read a single book from the NYT bestsellers list just because the book was on it, and only maybe a quarter of the books I have ever loved have ever appeared there.
It's a list that means nothing to me or people like me who read for fun, excitement, and adventure because almost none of the books that have ever appeared on it contain any of that. As far as I can tell, the vast majority of them consist of the bland, middle of the road, middle class, general fiction scratchings (along with the usual bi-annual Stephen King book) from the kind of people who told themselves their novel is Great because it's American.
I am not impressed with the American Publishing industry as a whole.
