No! That would be cultural “assimilation”, which is required for the marginalized group to survive within an environment controlled by a dominant culture. BIPoC were not only encouraged to be Christian, for the purposes of pacification, but in many cases Black and Indigenous people were “forced” to become Christian (See: Indian Residential Schools). Black people at forst were not allowed to learn to read, and when we did start learning , the Bible was often our only source.
So no! We didn’t adopt Christianity because we “appreciated” it.
The difference between assimilation and appropriation is the existence of the power dynamic between marginalized people, and the dominant group. Marginalized people aren’t necessarily appreciating the dominant culture (although sometimes they can and do), but sometimes have little choice but to adopt attitudes and behaviors that will make their lives run more smoothly.
