One of the reasons there is such a lack of trust between white people, and those of us who have been racialized, is that lack of sight. Ive been around a lot of white people who are not only incapable of seeing color, or racism, they don’t, or refuse to see, or acknowledge themselves, and often tell me a delusional version of who they are as a person. They cannot, or will not, be ruthlessly honest with themselves about who they truly are. And so, they are not capable of being ruthlessly honest about anything else, including racist ideology.
If they’re too scared to look at their real face, and acknowledge that, then they will run from any other topic that makes them uncomfortable. But being able to look honestly at oneself despite the fear of what you’ll find, is the first step to enlightenment and real compassion others.
WE (PoC) see you. We’ve always been able to see and describe whiteness, and often see you better than you see yourselves (or perhaps want to.)
I cannot trust the opinions of white people, for other white people, because they are simply bad judges of other whites, and bad or blind judges even of themselves.
I’m always willing to applaud self knowledge and wish you luck on your journey of becoming, because that’s something that’s very important to me, and I know it requires a level of frank, fearless, and sometimes utterly ruthless honesty with oneself, which is not comfortable or pleasing, but it does carry over into public behavior. If you can judge yourself with ruthless honesty, then you can accurately judge others and situations. Only then can you be trusted not to continue to harm racialized people.
