Nowhere did we see this white male territoriality more clearly illustrated than in Gamergate, and in the entire industry of pop culture since then. The white men who wrapped their entire personal identities around consuming products they didn’t create, or own, showed their whole asses, while trying to keep “outsiders” like women and PoC, from participating in the enjoyment of those products (games, movies, music, etc.)

That PoC and women are now enjoying the things they enjoyed, could be seen as an expansion of fandom ,and a reason to share more, with potential friends. Instead, they have decided to dedicate themselves to the idea that “those others” shouldn’t get to enjoy, or participate in, the pop culture artifacts that used to be exclusively aimed at their demographic.

It’s stupid. They could see these new members of fandom as an opportunity to show and share their love for these things that matter so much to them (and some do behave this way) but far too many are only interested in pushing these other people out and slamming the door. They want these products all to themselves, and don’t want to share.
