Not only that but when you're black the automatic assumption, based entirely on your skin color, is that you don't or can't speak standard English! That's where the racism comes in. When people are surprised you speak English well, and feel a need to tell you how articulate you are! There are elements of code switching that white people don't get. The assumption is that your English is good as soon as you are seen.
