No, no it does not surprise me. In fact, I left a message on my Tumblr page a couple days after I saw the trailer, asking if racists had already lost their sht and started writing long thinkpieces about how their childhood was being ruined by the existence of brown skin!
(OMG! I can’t sexualize that person! Their skin is brown! SWEET MARY!!!, I can’t jerk off to that character! They’re not white! OH,NO! I’m being reminded that black people exist in a space where I didn’t expect to see them!)
These are the basic themes.
It’s just gotten to the point where every time a black or brown person gets an acting job, i expect these people to crawl from under the floorboards with their bad faith arguments for why they don’t like looking at black people, unless those black people are telling black people’s stories. Because gob forbid they show up in stories they think belong solely to white people, (like anything based on European mythology!)
