No, I think what you mean is, there is a “sourness” to American TV. I cannot watch any American reality TV at all. It’s all awful. The screaming, big eyed rages, and constant backbiting, just works my last nerve. American shows encourage their people to treat each other badly.

I think part of the reason they all get along on the BBS is not just because of the general British demeanor of prioritizing decorum, but because they don’t believe they are competing against each other. They are competing against their own selves, or their lack of confidence, and the testing of their skills.

Many of the contestants seem pretty insular, or introverted, and it’s a culture, and environment, that doesn’t encourage viciousness for its own sake, the way American TV does. American TV is all about “the spectacle!” And “the drama”. This show really just concentrates on baking. Nobody can bake well in an environment where the other contestants are saying nasty things about each other to the cameraman, and I’m sure everyone can hear it. It’s really not set up for them to bad mouth each other.

Plus, people who love to bake, (me/my friends/the contestants), are just generally agreeable people! I’ve worked in public kitchens before and that really is how people in those places tend to behave. There’s a kind of camaraderie there that I’ve never had in any other type of job.
