It was pandering when the audiences were only straight white men! How is this form of pandering worse than the kind of pandering that gave the US such straight male audience oriented gems like Superman 4, or that early Captain America movie, or the truly awful tv series Manimal, or more recently The Inhumans. There’s some truly horrific popular entertainment out there whose specific purpose, for the past forty years, was geared towards getting the dollar of that particular demographic.

Today, some of the awful junk, with bad stories, is gonna be aimed at lgbtq people, or Black and Brown people. Most of it will be forgotten in a few years, while the best stuff remains. That’s not any different than the badly written stories catering (for decades) to the tastes of straight white men.

Marginalized people understand that these are corporations that are in the business of making money, by appealing to certain audiences, and we’ve used that in our favor. If they want our money than make characters and stories about us, and hire writers and creators who look like us to do that.

Yes, they are businesses, and they are doing nothing more than moving on to catering to the next demographic of people, who will make money for them, Gen Z, which is more progressive and open minded and specifically vocal about the kinds of entertainments they want to see. Marginalized people have made it very clear to them that we’re not Going to give any more of our money than necessary.
