Ironically, no amount of looking respectable gained women any respect. We still got beaten, raped, and killed while wearing our best outfits.! Does anyone really think that the women who somehow managed to survive what happened in Tulsa were spared because they had on the correct clothes, wore makeup, and had their hair properly done? Women still got water hosed, beaten by police, and attacked with dogs while wearing their Sunday best!

This is why I do not hold with respectability politics from anybody, Black or white, and Monique and all the rest like her, can sit down and shut it up. She should use that energy for attacking racists, rather than coming for the easy target: Black women.

But it’s always easier to drag a Black woman than it is to attack those with more power, I guess.
