In Defense of Forced Diversity

This argument has been bothering me.

As long as there are only one, two, or a handful of us, however, I presume in a field such as science fiction, where many of its writers come out of the liberal-Jewish tradition, prejudice will most likely remain a slight force — until, say, black writers start to number thirteen, fifteen, twenty percent of the total. At that point, where the competition might be perceived as having some economic heft, chances are we will have as much racism and prejudice here as in any other field.

We are still a long way away from such statistics.

But we are certainly moving closer.

Recently Medium recommended a post to me under Inclusion and Diversity where the writer made the argument that they were getting tired of “forced diversity” in movies and TV shows. I have been told that if something online pisses you off you should examine why and that’s what I’m doing now. Why am I mad about what she said? Why is her article living rent-free in my head? I’m not here to call her names, and I’m not interested in calling her out, but I have heard this type of argument over and over, only it was usually from angry white fanboys who were upset that the latest film iteration of some superhero wasn’t white and male.
