I think there was some brain study done that showed that the human brain really cannot tell the difference between real people and fictional characters, which is why we react the way we do to fiction. The same areas of the brain light up when we're reading as when we socialize with the all the people we love! For readers these worlds and peopel are very real. If I can close my eyes and picture myself walking in that world and meeting those characters, then it has as much impact as meeting real people.
The worlds you create for your daughters are real to them and they will want to visit that world and those friends every chance they get.
"Why do we think fictional characters are real how our brains work?

The last explanation for our thinking that fictional characters are real, is our human ability to empathize. The ability to identify emotionally, or to feel the emotions of, fictional characters, is because of our human ability to empathize.
