I think the existence of the internet is what has prompted some of the wider culture wars. A change in technology sometimes prompts cultural shifts.

The example I like to use is the invention of the handheld camera, which happened to coincide with the rise of the Civil Rights era, and had a hand in prompting the US to move forward on human rights issues, in a way that had been stagnant, before it was faced with criticism for its hypocrisy, from places like Russia and China.

Marginalized cultures now have a much louder megaphone than ever before. Young people can access the personal stories of the very people Christianity has been badmouthing with impunity for decades.
