I think men are raised to care very much...about what other men think. Other men is pretty much the only group they pay any heed to and it's how so much bigotry, homophobia, and misogyny moves from generation to generation. Caring what other men think keeps men and boys easily manipulated by more powerful men. It keeps them in line and behaving as they are expected to do.
