I think it’s because those types of white people have their entire identity wrapped up in the idea that their ancestors were, not just good people, but the best kind of people. Such people are always ready to take credit for the good things that were done in the past. They’re always ready to coast on the laurels of the dead, while shirking responsibility for their atrocities.
