I still think the defaced statues should be preserved though. They have true stories attached to them now, in ways that were not originally intended when they were made, giving them a different importance than before.

What’s interesting to me is if they are replaced they may no longer be replaced with mega-statuary like before. We already have a lot of public statues that are just the size of regular people. You’re not meant to revere, celebrate, or look on them in awe. The viewer is meant to look at them as regular people.

I remember joking with my friends, that I wanted all of them to be replaced with nonhuman cartoon characters, but now the I really think about it, I don’t think it’s a bad idea. Replacing the statues with objects or concepts, is an option.
