I sat through all of the atrocity of the past couple of weeks, from Aubrey, to Cooper, to Floyd, and I was definitely caught up in my feelings about all of it, but the video that most succinctly captured for me, the sheer irony of police committing police brutality, against people protesting police brutality, was something I saw on Tumblr.
In this video, a young woman is walking down the sidewalk with a friend, she is either unaware, or unperturbed, by the small group of cops walking a few feet behind her. She wasn’t protesting, holding a sign, or in any way drawing attention, just like a dozen other people in that moment, when one of the cops decides it’s a good idea to run up behind her, and shove her to the ground, into the street. The other cops saw this and did nothing. Said nothing. They just kept walking.
The shoving was not in self defense, served no purpose, and protected no one. They seemingly did it on a whim.
This is the mindset we’re dealing with, but what’s terrifying about it is they really do not care if we all see it. They have attacked medical personnel, and journalists. Their arrogance and cruelty has been running unchecked for decades, and if these are the things we are seeing, it turns my stomach to think of how many more atrocities we did NOT see.
