I love Asian Action and Horror movies. I've been watching those for years. I'm starting to enjoy Asian Dramas a lot more too.
One of my most hated tropes in American Drama are the teens who hate and disrespect their parents. First, they only ever show relationships between white parents and children, and when they do show Black parents, sometimes they are unnecesarily harsh, usually for laughs.
In Asian Dramas you don't see a whole lot of that trope. People may rebel against convention, but that doesn't automatically equate to hating or being ashamed of their parents, which is something I never encountered in the Black community (unless someone's parents were exceptionally abusive.)
It was interesting to find out that in some Chinese communities, it is the role of the eldest daughter to stay home and take care of her aging parents. I am the oldest daughter and I took care of my Mom before she passed. When I told my co-workers that's what I did, they would always be really happy about it, and tell me what a good daughter I was! Like they were excited that our two cultures had that in common, so I like to see that dynamic in movies and shows and you don't get much of that in American entertainment.
