I have watched as multiple social media platforms begin to degrade as it eventually attracts that portion of society thst either the lowest common denominator or simply bad opportunistic actors. In the early oughts I watched as the Yahoo message boards started to sink into an infestation of troll, bullies, and malcontents, in real time, and I've watched this happen with every social media platform since then until their collapse, like MySpace, Facebook, and now I've watched it happen to Twitter.
Sooner or later, America's worst simply infest any platform until it becomes useless for regular people, and that's going to happen to every single social media platform that doesn't carefully mod its users. Free speech absolutism is the death knell of every platform because you can watch in real time what happens when everybody is free to say any damn thing they please. They will, and they do so regardless of impact!
It is the observable illustration in real time of Popper's Paradox of Intolerance.
"Popper contends that a society that tolerates intolerant ideas will succumb to the forces of the intolerant, which are inherently dangerous. Thus, the notion of a completely tolerant society is destroyed."
It reminds me of the story about a Skinhead who walks into a bar and gets violently run out by the bartender, who explains to his patrons that if he lets one of them in, that person will tell his friends it's okay for them to be there too, and at some point it will become a bar for Skinheads, because all the non-skinhead patrons will leave.
