I have met so many white people who avoid studying American History outside of "the things white men accomplished", that it's not funny. Many of the ones I've met act as if learning America's history is some kind of contagious disease or a punishment. They act genuinely afraid to learn about it and the only conclusion I've reached regarding that attitude, is that they are afraid to feel uncomfortable reading about just how horribly white people treated other groups of people. (Yes, white people did other things, but I think that fear is a real factor.)
