I have found that I can cut back pretty far on the news. I'm on only three social media platforms (which includes Medium) and I have plenty of hobbies to distract me from scrolling. Also one of the ways I consume news is by subscribing to people on social media that I trust to tell me the highlights of the day or the week, in the way I want to hear them, with a minimum of faux outrage and sensationalism. I'm interested in politics, so that's what I subscribe to hear, as a result I get an absolute minimum of news about petty crime, house fires, and celebrities.
I've also discovered that if the story is big enough it will find its way to me.
