I can attest the AAVE is highly fascinating to white teens. For them I think it’s a form of slang, while for us it’s actually a language. The two are different things and serve different purposes, but there is a bit of overlap. It’s also an issue we keep running into where white people keep misappropriating words and phrases from what is essentially a living and spoken language because of their belief that it’s just slang, and end up upsetting the speakers.
