I became aware of this in the 90s when Salma Hayek appeared on a late night talk show and talked about her wealthy family in her home country. The host said that her lifestyle sounded very white and she corrected him to say she was white. In her home country she is considered white, and only in the US is she considered a woman of color. That was an important conversation to me.
