I agree! It's not that he doesn't have anything to say, it's just what he has to say isn't especially profound. I don't require profundity in art either (mine isn't) but I do expect more than what I've seen from him.
I've been an artist almost my entire life (from the drawings of elementary school to the fiber arts of today, and every other kind of art in between, including music) and I've never tried to make money at any of it. I didn't want to monetize my enjoyment of the activity.
I'm with you on this though, I question how good he is (he's okay, his work is not especially remarkable), if he was just a regular Joe he'd be thoroughly unremarkable, probably even mocked, and does he understand what he's done. Was the comedy simply a jumping off point to start the painting career he really wanted, or vice versa?
