Hilary Swank has an excuse in that she was a new actor, trying to get into an industry, with no knowledge of this particular issue. She has since gotten that knowledge and made a choice to change her thinking on this matter. But then Hilary Swank is a much more intelligent and nuanced woman than Scarlett Johansson, who (judging from her many interviews I’ve seen the past ten years) has only the most surface understanding of feminist issues.

Scarlett has not that excuse. She knows better now, because all this information is out in the world, but she’s reluctant to change, because she’s the kind of person who only glides across the top of an issue, without understanding its depths. She’s made a choice though, and her only excuse for insisting on this idea, especially at this place and time, is pure selfishness.
