Hi Allison,
Ultimately, it doesn’t really matter why he wore it, I don’t think. It doesn’t matter if he supports or doesn’t support the Klan because wearing that, even just as a costume speaks to a level of emotional degradation that is disturbing. It’s long been the belief that white people don’t empathize or sympathize with Black people, they don’t care about our feelings about anything, and doing things like this is one sign of that. Even if he doesn’t openly believe in their ideology its still a racist act for disregarding the feelings of those who’ve been most often on the receiving end of that ideology.
