Can confirm.

I saw this in my roommate in college. When we met I was just another brand new rube to her, because I was alone, and out of my element. We were in that phase in school where everyone is looking to make friends with new people, and are hence on their best behavior, as was she. But over time, as she became more toxic, I became more miserable, and having never met a narcissist before, I didn’t no why.

Narcissists are the kind of people who will say five different things to the five different people surrounding them, and hope those people don’t share notes. My friends shared notes, (of course she didn’t think I was capable of making friends without her), and I eventually, and to her puzzlement, and surprise, “untethered” myself from her.

I thank those people every time I think of them.
