At least part of the reason for this discomfort is the score. It's music that isn't music. Its the sounds made by someone who has perhaps heard of music by rough description, and this noise is especially distorted at the beginning of the film, (when Bella is both mentally and emotionally younger) but by the end of the film it starts to sound a little bit more "normal" (as she has reached adulthood).
