And I hate to say this, but it is often color coded as well. Women of color don't get to be Madonnas. They certainly didn't get to be considered pure. Not saying white women weren't considered impure, but impurity was always the excuse white men used to exploit, abuse, rape, and traffick Black, Brown, Asian, and Indigenous women. A lot of that attitude still lingers today in the treatment of the Black Jezebel, the sexy "squaw", the spicy Latina, and the Lotus Blossom tropes.
