And I can't help but think that the invention of social media may have played at least some part in their collective existential crisis they seem to all be having.
Social media (before it became infested with the lowest common denominator mindset that always seems to set in) made it so that marginalized identities could talk directly back to those who wanted to oppress them, and EVERYBODY who had ever experienced any vector of marginalization did just that. Women, the disabled, PoC, transgender men and women, the gay community, everyone!
Not only was everyone talking back to all those men who wanted to hold on to the status quo that disenfranchised so many people, but everyone was talking to each other and listening, and that kind of thing had to be stopped. We saw an all out reactionary online assault (beginning with Gamergate) from these men.
None of this is new. These kind of events happen from time to time and run their course. When the dust settles, and the old guard dies off, and Gen X calms down, hopefully society will have progressed just a little bit more.
