And for those people who think its only White male fans engaging in this kind of behavior, you obviously have never encountered female fans of various television shows. I first encountered these types of fans in the Supernatural fandom, where they harassed not just the writers, but the actors, and even their wives, in support of a “ship” they were not getting in the show. It got to the point where the actors had to address their behavior directly, and the writers changed the trajectory of the show because of it.
There’s also the extreme (and often pornographic) harassment of Candace Patton on the show The Flash, where she was accused of sleeping with the creators of the show for the role, has had her face photoshopped into porn photos, and called everything but a child of god, and this is from female fans of the show. There’s the body shaming of the lead character Grant Gustin, and the social media harassment of Ana Diop from the show Titans, and the list goes on…
The stuff you listed is just the stuff that makes the mainstream news because the fandoms for it are so much larger. It's really just the tip of the iceberg, of the backlash against diversity we’ve been seeing in Popular media. Some of the more extreme behavior doesn't get attention because it involves women fans, and “shipping”, and is therefore seen as less important somehow. The racism of female fans is quieter, but no less damaging, and toxic, than the louder version practiced by the White male fans of Scifi movies.
